The certification of the president of the Philippines for Reproductive Health Bill as a priority bill serves as the king’s marching order for both the upper and lower house to vote for the fate of RH Bill.
Hence, by the magical stroke of a pen by the president, the RH Bill passed the 3rd reading in the House of Representatives and the 2nd and 3rd reading in the House of the Senate both on the same day of September 17, 2012. The result showed that the president enjoys a huge political capital in both the houses of congress.
Celebration and jubilation follows the passing of the RH Bill. The 2 lady senators namely Pia Cayetano and Miriam Defensor Santiago hug each other with proud smiles of victory.
The RH Bill passed both the house of congress despite the fierce opposition of the Roman Catholic Church.
The RH Bill proponents knowingly misled the nation. With or without RH Bill, our existing laws are aplenty of provisions and letter of laws that protect the rights of women and children; that there is no law abridging the freedom of choice of couples to choose how many children they want to bear. That the rights and availability of all information pertaining to safe sex practices as well as all relevant information for the proper care of pregnant women are not impaired with or without RH Bill.
What is lacking is the complete, consistent and effective execution of the existing laws by our national and local government.
The only difference that RH Bill will provide is to mandate the allocation of a huge public fund for free distribution of condoms and contraceptives so that the whole populace, children and teens included, can freely enjoy a safe, satisfying sex experience. It encourages an emboldened society to enjoy sex almost all the time without the need for control and self-restraint.
Early on, before the voting, some lawmakers even mocked the Catholic hierarchy by saying that it has lost its hands with its flock and with insulting braggadocio declared that there is no such a thing as Catholic votes.
Various braggart news columnists and bloggers brandished as well that the catholic prelates are jumping over the fence and are meddling in the political arena. They are too proud to say that they are Catholics, but are in favor of RH Bill and have gone too far in saying that they and their Catholic friends and relatives have purposely stopped attending Sunday masses to avoid hearing the sermons of the priests as regards RH Bill.
Each one of us is entitled to our own opinion. Each one of us has our own faith and belief. Although we live in a democratic country, we do not enjoy absolute freedom to do everything we wish to do. In the same way that our religion and the church leaders influenced the way we conduct our lives. The State has the Constitution, whereas, the Roman Catholic has the Holy Bible. It is the officers of the church, for Roman Catholic, headed by the Pope, who interprets every words, sentences, phrases and paragraphs written in the Holy Bible.
In today’s realities, the separation of the State and the Church is no longer happening. The State is mandated to enact and implement laws and has the duty to govern its citizenry. The Church protects the very tenet of its faith and guides its flock in accordance to its belief and the laws of the church. Both the State and the Church has to act accordingly to protect its people and or its flock.
The State, if you violate the laws of the land, has the mandate and authority to punish you or sentence you with prison time. The Roman Catholic like any other religions has its own sets of rules and beliefs that it teaches or imposes to its followers and or flocks.
Hardened criminals are imprisoned in highly secured and secluded areas. Those people who defied the laws and has committed high crimes are being hunted and called as fugitives and if proven guilty are rightfully called criminals.
Fortunately, the Roman Catholics provide greater freedom for its flocks as compared to the State. Nonetheless, Roman Catholic devotees must rightfully oblige themselves to follow the teachings of the church. Catholics likewise do not have the absolute freedom to select and merely follow some teachings and discard the other teachings of the Catholic Church. Simply put, all the teachings of the Catholic Church apply to all of the flock individually and collectively.
Those who openly defies the teachings of the Catholic Church are renegades, are we going to call these renegades half Catholics? Or these renegades must voluntarily stop to classify themselves as Catholics.
I think there is no such thing as half Catholic. If you voluntarily, willingly and openly declare that you do not follow the teachings of the Catholic Church and its hierarchy then you are not rightfully an obedient Catholic.
I would say that half Catholics are like Manananggals who are unwilling to control their desires, but with capability to fly and maneuver to directions that they deem convenient and favorable to their interests.
Fortunately, Catholicism, no matter how difficult always finds its way to understand each and every member of its flock. In fact, it is ready to leave a million faithful in search of one lost brethren. Indeed, one lost soul counts.
One lost soul is too important. Let us extend our hands to our lost brethren and bring them to the fold of moral righteousness. Controlling the desires of the flesh is one mark of a sacrifice that is worth a million times than safe satisfying sex using condoms and other contraceptives.
Let us pass on a strong moral foundation to our next generation. We need to form a movement to repeal the RH Bill in case it became a law. Long live Catholicism.
